Super Awesome Ungulates You Might Not Have Ever Heard Of Yet Part 1
- The Chiru (Pantholops hodgsonii) or Tibetan antelope is a critically endangered species that inhabits the Tibetan plateaus. Most famous for Shahtoosh, or their wool, which is one of the reasons they’re so endangered. Poachers simply kill the antelope to harvest the wool.
- The Saiga (Saiga tatarica) is a critically endangered antelope that was once found from the Carpathian Mountains across and through Mongolia. Now it is limited to small populations in Russia and Kazakhstan. There’s also a Mongolian subspecies.
- The Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) or Blue Bull is the largest Asian antelope, reaching a height of almost 5’ at the shoulders. The males are a blueish-grey coat and small horns, whilst the females are more of a tawny brown colour and lack horns at all. You can find them pretty much all over India.
- The Gaur (Bos gaurus) or Indian Bison, is the tallest species of wild cattle in the world, reaching over 7’ at the shoulder. Once spread across South and South-East Asia, their populations have become smaller and more fragmented over time, with the Sri Lankan gaur having become regionally extinct.
- The Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) also known as the Vu Quang Ox, is one of the rarest mammals on earth, being identified as recently as 1992 with no confirmed wild sightings since.
- The Takin (Budorcas taxicolor) is a goat-antelope from the eastern Himalayas with four subspecies (I think the one I have is B. taxicolor bedfordi or Shaanxi, the golden takin). It’s the second-largest member of the subfamily Caprinae, the largest being the Muskox (Ovibos moschatus).
